5.3. Series connection

Connection of power supplies, converters and mixed assemblies is possible if the following limitations are observed:

• The ripple of the overall voltage will be affected in its form and amplitude, and it can be the addition of the ripple values of the individual power supply units connected in series.

• The overall voltage value should not exceed the minimum isolation voltage of the power supplies or converters connected in series. Placing diodes in antiparallel connection to each converter or power supply outputs, as shown in figure 31, is a common practice to protect power supplies in a hypothetical short-circuit at the load. These diodes should be sized to withstand the maximum current of each power supply or converter, although in normal operation they have no heat dissipation.
